FBFF: Fashion and Fitness go together like peas and carrots

College roomie and I after running our first real race (Turkey Trot 5k)
And then we really stepped it up and ran a 1k :) I know, we're hard core :)
Howdy folks! Happy Friday! In just a few hours I will be making my way up to Boston to go watch my brother play baseball, visit friends and attend my first ever RED SOX GAME!! I've already posted about my excitement on that front, so I'll spare you a repeat and get down to business. Since I know you are all little smarty pants you have probably already figured out from the above photos and the post title that today's FBFF post is all about fitness and how it fits in the world of fashion. (Sorry for my very wordy answers!)

1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why? Currently, yes (thank goodness) but it hasn't always been the case. From the time I was six years old all the way through high school I was a competitive swimmer, swimming year round and training under a pretty intense schedule (well obviously not when I was six, but you get what I mean!) I had horrid eating habits because I  was able to get away with eating whatever I wanted without it showing, due to the training I was doing. As much as I loved the sport, I burnt myself out competing at that level and got very frustrated with my body when it wasn't able to push past the "puberty plateau" that many female swimmers hit around 14. The greats break through, but most of us peak around 14. I was a peaker. Though I swam in college, it was not at an intense level and was more for the social aspect than the exercise. While my activity level significantly decreased, my poor eating habits remained, and thus I gained weight. Nothing huge, but enough to make me feel very self-conscious about my body. And in turn I decreased my activity level even more because I hated the way everything fit on me, and I wasn't comfortable with myself. After college, I did nothing exercise wise for a good 8 months and that was my low point. My body was really starting to look noticeably different and I was fed up with how crummy I felt about myself. Finally, after I moved in with my roommate (who is a runner and a very fit person!) I started to make some changes. She convinced me to try running with her even though I told her I hated running with a passion. Surprisingly, as we eased into it I found myself not hating it. And then shockingly, I found myself starting to enjoy it and even look forward to our runs each night. For me, it is all about having a buddy to keep me accountable (keep me entertained!) and to keep me motivated to keep going when all I feel like doing is collapsing.

2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image? More than I can even express! Working out for the right reasons has had this effect. I have finally learned that there is no right way to look, and that I have to stop comparing my weight to those around me and focus on what feels right for me. Now that I have gotten into the groove of an exercise program, I have found that I am doing it purely to feel comfortable in my own body and not for numbers on a scale, or to look a certain way. Though the actual weight loss has been small in the last couple months, I feel completely different about my body. Although I would like to lose a few more pounds and tone certain areas (my arms!!) more, I am comfortable with my shape again and that is the best feeling in the world.
3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion? I would say I am a mix. Functionality is a must for my workout clothes, for sure as I want to be able to move around comfortably in whatever I wear. But you won't see me in boy shorts and a baggy shirt hitting the gym, because I personally feel confident when I wear clothing that emphasizes my femininity. I am not willing to sacrifice feeling confident, even when I am working out. So I like to balance function and fashion by choosing form-fitting, but still flattering, silhouettes for workout gear. Yoga pants and a tank like the one above are my ideal gear. And I also like to keep my pension for color alive while working out because I truly believe I get a boost of energy from dressing myself in something bright.

4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness? I think society puts way more pressure on us to be "thin" than "fit" and that is really backwards. Total body fitness is much more important than the number you see on the scale, and we tend to forget that. I know that even when I got to my worst physical fitness point, I still looked an average size, so no one really urged me to do anything different. Because I wasn't a larger girl, they didn't think I needed to change my routine. But I did because my routine was nothing. I needed to be staying active and doing something to improve my health daily, and that wasn't necessarily reflected in my outward appearance. Only you can know what your body needs, and yet we are still pressured by outside forces to "think" we need to be a certain weight or size.

5.  Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal. Though I am enjoying getting more into running, I am not a person who ever wants to run a marathon or anything like that. I get bored running for more than an hour. However, I do think it would be cool to say I completed a 10k maybe? And I would definitely like to look into doing a triathlon of some form, since my real exercise passion is swimming.

What are your thoughts on fitness and fashion? I'd love to know! And don't forget to check out Modly Chic to see lots of other awesome thoughts on the topic!

MTV Style Feature!

Photo from MTV Style
Question: How excited was I to sign on to twitter today and see a Tweet from MTV Style announcing the top style bloggers of the week with my name in it?? Answer: Over the moon excited!! Their weekly roundup is a staple of my Thursday, as I always love getting new inspiration on ways to wear current trends. Plus it introduces me to fantastic new blogs, which I think we all love! And it was all the more thrilling that it was my comfy-as-PJs outfit, which they actually mentioned in the feature :)

You can check out the full feature here and see how two other amazing bloggers, Ehmonie and Kirsten, styled their chambray shirts. I am obsessed with Ehmonie's accessories (amazing Rebecca Minkoff bag anyone?) and Kirsten's très adorable reverse-classic look (I told her I thought her white denim skinnies were perfection. Don't you agree?) Thank you again MTV for making my day!!
And your daily dose of Eli :) The little bugger absolutely LOVES pens!!

The sun will come out ... today

Salut ladies! I hope you are all having an excellent week. I have to go ahead and say now, that I apologize for my shortened, not so super awesome posts this week. Between puppy cuddling and preparing for something potentially big career wise (more on that after it is over!) I have been very distracted this week. I have majorly new respect for dog owners this week as I am learning a whole lot from my little guy-mainly patience. I never get angry with him, because he is too cute to incite anger, but also because I really did know what I was taking on when I made this decision. But that doesn't make the 5:30 wakeups or the poop on my carpet a bed of roses. Btw, did I just make a major fashion faux pas by talking about poop on a style blog?? Eh, it's real life right now and this blog always has been very real life. So until puppy potty training is complete be forewarned that it is a distinct possibility that you will hear the word "poop" when you stop by.
Blouse: LC for Kohl's, Jacket: LOFT, Skirt: Michael Kors, via Rue La La, Shoes: Badgley Mischka, Earrings: Gifted, Bracelet: Juicy Couture (gifted), Ring: Gifted via Lichen and Lychee, Ring: Gifted via My Ring Obsession
I am always one to give credit where credit is due, and I definitely must give inspiration credit for this outfit to the lovely Liz at 26 and Counting! She rocked a military jacket and florals yesterday and it made me question how in the world I never thought to pair the two together during the 30 for 30 remix! No worries, though, because I remedied that problem right up this morning. Liz was so right on in this combination, as the military jacket really gives a feminine outfit a needed boost of edge.
Confession? The jacket barely lasted through these photos. Warm weather is officially here and I was dying wearing layers! The billowy blouse underneath was much more weather friendly.
Looking at my post-tights outfit photos makes me realize my dad was really, really right on something: I need some color-badly! Beach trip, please oh please? Who's with me?
Btw, don't worry about my missing "shadow" because he was still close by, he just felt a little camera shy today and  preferred to watch me intently while I snapped instead of flaunting himself in front of the camera.
Since you can't see the shoes at all in these pictures (need less grassy photo locations!) I thought I'd show you old photos from the first time I debuted these shoes on the blog, which seems like forever ago! I think they were in my second ever outfit post.
If gold heels ever become the new red sole, then I will be golden (pun intended!)
In other news, the darling Tiffanie of A New Found Love majorly added some sunshine to my life when she gifted me the sunshine award (ha get it? Remember I am the cornball queen!) Go check out the adorable momma with major style and give her some love. She has an amazing giveaway going on right now, too, celebrating 100 posts! And thank you SO much Tiffanie for brightening my day!
Since it's impolite to hog all the happy sunshine-ness for yourself, I am passing on the love! It is always hard to pick just a few blogs to highlight, but the rules to the sunshine game are to give the award to 12 blogs. Check out these ladies and they will surely bring sunshine to your day!

Is that 12? I think so but my brain is wiped this week, so really, who knows!

My shadow

Bonsoir beautifuls! I hope you are having the most wonderful Tuesday. Well, as wonderful as any Tuesday can be. I know everyone is always hating on Mondays, but I have a much greater dislike for Tuesdays than Mondays. On Mondays I am still basking in whatever awesomeness occurred over the weekend. But by Tuesday, all the glitz and glam has worn off, I'm still 3 days away from the glory of another weekend and it seems like the day drags on slower than most. However, I often have the allure of Trivia Tuesday to get me through the day, so I won't bash on poor mr. Tuesday too much! Ohhh speaking of Trivia, did I mention that our humble little time is now in third place for the season?? We are getting our butts kicked by the silly Government, but we won't dwell on the negative! I unfortunately can't make Trivia tonight, so I am sending positive vibes to my team as we speak *goooo Irrational Actors!* Btw, I am pretty good at sending out positive vibes, so if you wish to make any requests feel free to do so in a comment below :)
Shirt: Kohl's, Tank/Skirt: White House Black Market, Shoes: Aldo, Watch: Michael Kors, Bracelets/red Ring: Amrita Singh via Hautelook, Earrings: Gifted, Necklace: Forever 21
So I believe you will be seeing quite a bit of Eli in the coming weeks, even if I didn't want you to! He is basically my little shadow, and stays glued to my feet anytime we leave the apartment. While we are "puppy potty training" I decided to make the most of his 30 minute morning bathroom time and take my outfit shots, as well. I apologize for the less than gorgeous apartment building background in the meantime!
One of only two photos from the entire shoot without my little shadow in the shot!
Look at Eli posing for the camera! He catches on quickly :)
Aw my little munchkin just melts my heart every time I see him!
I finally busted out my favorite skirt again! It had been too long and it was time to transition the baby from a pre-Spring look to a full on Spring outfit, as we are currently being blasted with 80 degree weather! I was almost sweating this morning taking these photos. Yuck.
Stop mom- you're embarrassing me!
Confession? Hey give me credit, it has been a while since I've had to confess to you. I used to laugh (internally of course. I'm never rude) at those people who talked about their pets/treated them like children. And now I am one of them... Oh well, call my a hypocrite. I don't care. I'm too invested in puppy bliss to notice.

Puppy love

Hey dolls and a Happy belated Easter! I hope you are all sitting upright in your chairs right now and aren't slumped over in a candy-coma! But if you are, I encourage you to keep reading this post because I guarantee that the cuteness it contains will wake you right up! Don't worry, I'm not so conceited to think that pictures of moi would have that effect, but I feel fairly confident that the little guy I am about to show you will.

I interrupt our regularly scheduled programming of sequins, stripes and polka dots to bring you the cutest look in fur you ever will see. And yes, this is a bit of photo overload, but it is so worth it- I promise!
Introducing the love of my life- Eli! I am a finally a puppy owner, ladies! I have always, always wanted a puppy and  now that I am finally living on my own, I was able to indulge that want and come home with this little guy! Roommate and I have both been talking about puppies, a lot lately and we had sort of decided that we were going to wait until 2012 to get one. But when we came across an ad in The Washington Post this weekend for silky terrier puppies in the area, we were in our car before we even knew what we were doing. I kept saying in my head that I was just going to look. Now, those of you know me personally will know that I am physically incapable of just "going to look" when it comes to animals. Show me the most covetable purse on this planet, and I'll be able to resist if I'm not looking to buy a purse right then, but show me this irresistible little face and I am putty. I melt, I swoon, I coo and inevitably I leave with a new friend. Which is exactly what happened this weekend. As soon as we walked in the room with the puppies and saw Eli and his brothers (wish I could have kept them all!) roommate goes "Please get one!" So I did! Now we are a happy little family of 5!
My two lb. baby boy!
He is a very sleepy little guy. So my dog.
But when he is ready to play, he is ready!
Cuddle bug.
Pup in a cup.
He is sooo teenie tiny, I worry I am going to squish him in my sleep!
So loved and spoiled by mama already!
I can pretty much guarantee that you will be seeing pics of fur baby quite often, so I do hope you will love him as much as I do!!

It's Thursday, Thursday Thursday

Hiya babes! Happy awkward and awesome Thursday! You know it is my favorite day and you know why :) I just loooove sharing all the moments of my week that make me smile and those that make me say "ohhhh, owwww, yikes." Yea, you know the ones I mean.
Dress/Shoeswhite: White House Black Market, Cardigan: LOFT, Watch: Michael Kors, Pearls: China, Bracelet/Ring: Amrita Singh
Awkward:
-When "non dates" go in for the kiss. Disclaimer: this isn't my awkward story but I'm borrowing it from an anonymous source who gave permission for it be used as long as they remain nameless. Let's call her Sheila for all intents and purposes. So lets just say Sheila got a loooot more than she bargained for on her "I thought I was at dinner with a friend" evening.
-Doing FBI background check interviews for people. The interviewer always, without fail, will ask you the most random question about your friend that you could possibly imagine. So of course you pause, because you are taken aback. FBI interviewer then proceeds to glare at you and try and determine why you are pausing before answering the question and whether your answer is now a lie because you paused, when in reality it was the sheer ridiculousness of the question that caused you to pause! P.S. I am dubbing myself official background check reference girl for my friends, considering I have now done 3 of these interviews. Yep, if you need an FBI reference, I'm your girl. But if you need an FBI reference that won't pause when asked insane questions, I am NOT your girl!
-Walking around saying things like "What a beaut", "How neat is that" and the classic "G dangit" all thanks to this guy. Actually thanks to roommate for showing him to me. Gdangit roommate!!
-People who rub citrus on their feet at the dinner table because they have been told it makes skin soft. NOT inspired by real life at all. *cough cough*
Awesome:
-Hilarious old-time YouTube videos that seriously have me laughing out loud, and possibly even snorting. What? I said possibly! You have no proof that it is for sure occurring.
-The fact that the most popular search phrase driving people to my blog is "chai latte". At first I questioned what this said about me, but after hearing mollypg's sage advice on twitter that there are "much worse vices out there", I decided to embrace my delicious habit and rejoice that other chai latte addicts are happening on my little blog through our shared love of the tasty beverage!
-Finally getting a tripod (thanks to roommate!!) and a remote for my camera this weekend! I obviously still have a lot of adjusting to do, but at least I am outside taking pictures now!!
-And the big one of the week: BROTHER'S BIRTHDAY!! My not-so little anymore brother turns 20 today and I can't believe it. Kid is growing up! I'm so blessed to have Matthew as not only my brother, but my best friend and he makes me proud every single day. Love you bro and I'm so happy that I got to spend tonight with you!

I'm so excited, I just can't hide it!

Aloha lovahs! I feel the need to tell you right now, up-front that this post may contain more excitement and hullabaloo than you ever could have imagined, or possibly handle. I feel like I just got a hand-written, ornate invite to New York Fashion Week. Or was told that Audrey Hepburn somehow returned from the dead and she personally requested to meet me. Ok, maybe I'm not that excited. Buuut I will be getting to cross one of the "biggies" off of my personal list of things to do before I die. You know the gist: publish a book, go sky-diving, get married on the beach, read 100 classic novels and watch every Audrey Hepburn movie. Those are definitely some of the highlights of things I still need to do. But none of those will be occurring Saturday. Do you need a hint? I'll give you this. On Saturday I will be in...........................................Boston
Maxi dress (serving as skirt): Urban Outfitters, Chambray: Madewell, Flats: American Eagle, Watch: Michael Kors, Ring: Amrita Singh, Ring/Earrings: Gifted
I almost felt like I was cheating when I wore this to work today because it was too comfortable. It was like going to work in PJs and oddly enough that is a very disconcerting feeling. But I can tell you this- this dress will be a summer staple. I can see it now without the top, a brown belt and a cute fedora. Perfect weekend outfit!
I just loooved the stripes with the chambray look. It was so laid back, but it seemed just pulled together enough to work for work.
I guess you are going to get a lot of hand pointing at the camera shots until I figure out this whole remote thing.
I took half my photos today and decided I liked this location better.
I was a little worried I'd fall in though!
Did I mention this is my view from work? It makes me want to play!
And token head-less shot :)
Have you figured out what I am doing yet??? If you guessed GOING TO A RED SOX GAME you are the winner!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! And I'm leaving it on that, because I mean really, what can I say that tops that. Touche, Red Sox game, touche. Oh, itty bitty request though? Send some good vibes out to the universe that they get their act together and find their game before Saturday. My boys have been a bit disappointing so far this season.

Mr. Wrinkly

Here's the story,
Of an angry lady,
Who had had it up to here with her iron.
She thought he should do his job,
And he didn't
The stupid little turd.
Shirt: White House Black Market, Cardigan: Forever 21, Skirt: H&M, Shoes: Aldo, Watch: Michael Kors, Necklace/Ring: Amrita Singh via Hautelook, Earrings: Gifted,
Here's the story,
Of a wrinkly bottom,
Even though he had been ironed before work.
All day long he looked a mess,
As seen below,
What a poor little skirt.
I hope you are enjoying this little song. If you aren't, don't worry- it's almost done.
Till the one day when the lady realized something,
And she knew that it was much more than likely,
That the issue,
Was a case of user error.
That's the way she decided to to learn to iron.
To learn to iron, to learn to iron.
That's the way she decided to learn to iron!
Am I hiding my head in shame after that embarrassing song?
Or am I just playing the role of cool, aloof blogger?
Hi lovely readers. Is anyone still there after that incredibly random and out there latest version of the Brady Bunch song? I judge you a bit if you are. But I am sure happy to have you, you beautiful little weirdos. So in case you missed the message of that little tune, my skirt (aka wrinkly bottom) is wrinkly. And I (aka angry lady) did indeed iron it before work. Flash forward 10 minutes and it looks like this. I would try and blame the iron, but considering this is the second occurrence of said incident and two different skirts were involved, and the iron was used by my grandmother for years, I am thinking the best conclusion is that I am an ironing failure, and need lessons so I can master the skill of not looking like I slept in my clothes! Any volunteers?
Oh did I mention I am using my new tripod and remote?? You figured it out when you saw the remote not so stealthily hidden in my hand? What smart little buggers you are :)
Outside Laura is excited about how often she will now appear!
Trying to show the lace back, not Mr. wrinkly bottom!
In case you were wondering, the ring on my finger is going to serve as my "not-quite-as-cool-as-a-YSL-arty-ovale-ring- but-almost" ring, since my plans for obtaining that coveted beauty have been put on hold (a story for another time). And the best part, is that this version was such a steal I was able to get it in two colors!
I hope you will bear with me while I figure this whole tripod/remote thing out since my remote today only seemed to want to work when it was pointed directly at the camera, like so. Not quite what I was going for. Well they do say practice makes perfect!

Don't forget, if you have a question you have been dying to ask me you can pop on over to formspring and ask away!

Bisous!
